By far the best features are the autoripping of audio and video, the ability to download media information derived from filenames, and the bandwidth adjustments to allow streaming remotely. The VortexBox works really well as an all-in-one solution, I'm impressed. The VortexBox runs on an HP dx2200, which has a max of 2GB RAM - and it runs smoothly. I'm using it for audio and video, but not for pictures (no point for me).Įndpoints are computers, ipads and an xbox360 downstairs. I'm using VortexBox and the associated Plex server to host my media. It won't be as easy to manage as the FreeNAS plugins, but your possibilities will really only be limited by how much time you want to spend getting it to work. Plus, this would give you a lot of possibilities with running the previously-mentioned searching/media management/download/backup tools as well. If you still want to use your current machine as an High Def Home Theater PC that's hooked up to the TV, you might be better off with XBMCBuntu (or any distro you choose) and then setting up a media server to run in the background. There are also plugins for backup of your desktop files and you could host your own "cloud" backup. A bonus to this is there are a bunch of plugins for searching/managing/downloading media so you can turn off your PC and still be torrenting overnight.

Max it out on storage and RAM, set up a fileshare, and install Plex media server plugin to send it out to all of your devices. You can use just about anything, and old dual core PC would be fine, I don't know the specs on your Zino, but I'd imagine that it would work pretty well for what you want to do if you don't mind losing the video output. I'd take a look at this option if I were you, it might be a good choice for a media center server that isn't hooked up to the TV. I have an HP Microserver that runs FreeNAS with a whole bunch of plugins. Or should I just leave it as windows XP and install XMBC on it? Should I reinstall it with a linux system and put XMBC on it or PLEX?
